overworld map stuff
This week I made a background to be the overworld map for the player to walk around:
It's simple but effective, and goes with the rest of our artstyle
Ages ago, I did a whitebox for this area, and last week I drew over it:
But, I realised we wouldn't be able to use it as we needed a floor and walls for the character to move around in, so first I thought maybe I could draw some simple textures to add onto the whitebox:
I just did this simple brick pattern (doesn't quite repeat) and these roof tiles, but realised I didn't have the patience to do the UV unwrapping to make these work, so then I drew another version of this design/ something similar that can just be added onto a sort of box in Maya:
Initially, I had them seperately but I realised as I was unwrapping the UVs for the model, that I'd need it all in one picture, here they are close up/ seperate:
At first, when I planned on making the sides seperate images, I just drew the sides/ filled out the whole page, forgetting I had to make it line up with the other two sides:
so I cut off the buildings on each end, so all I had to line up were the clouds. I did that by carefully lining up each edge along the edge of the canvas/ moving them to opposite sides, and then extending the drawing off of that:
I hadn't blended it as much here, it was a bit of a mess because I didn't save any of the colours I used, and because of the airbrush, colourpicker wasn't 100% accurate. This wasn't that important though as the seam in the picture would kind of be hidden by the seam in the uv unwrap. I was able to blend it a bit more once it was all on the same image, but by that point I was on my computer using the mouse so I just tried my best with the blur, smudge and pen tools.
For the floor, I just did a grass texture using assets from the whitebox draw-over, hoping Gethin can add some of Molly's assets like pathways and trees in unreal engine:
When I imported the textures into Maya, they got distorted/ squashed into squares for the UV map, so just in case, I saved them as squares too. the file was too big to upload to blogger so here is a screenshot of everything for this background:
I tried to keep the size of the image as close to the origianals as possible to avoid it getting too compressed/ distorted (at least to avoid it besides obviously being squashed into a square).
