Beta Testing + Feedback

Image
This week we beta tested the game, but since we're making it in unreal, and it's in a slightly different version of unreal, we couldn't actually play it at uni, but we did show people videos and artwork, which seemed to go down well. Now we just have to finish the game/ put everything together.  Here's Gethin's video of the character moving around the scene: I just need to make a few buildings and things for the environment, and a fake loading screen, but could probably just use the assets we already have for that.

Finishing up the character model

I lost the original footage (forgot to backup on a USB stick) of me trying to do the UV unwrapping,  my lecturer told me the model needed more edge loops to the model were the joints are/ where it will bend, so I've added those too. Eventually, I gave up and used automatic UV unwrapping but followed the steps in a video from James, How Do I? (2022) where basically he deletes history and freezes transformations first, which helps fix any distortion that might happen, and then the uses the auto unwrap, and then makes any minor adjustments. When I tried to make some adjustments aftwerawrds it actually got worse, so I went with the unedited one. I have a copy of the model when I tried to manually unwrap the UVs, so I might come back to it later if I have time.  Update: turns out I was massively overcomplicating the UVs, I redid them and it turned out pretty well! Here's the process video:   For the texture painting on the wings, I copy, pasted and flipped the wi...

Finished Promo Art + Bonus Rat Sprite

Image
Some promotional art for our game, this was open to everyone/ anyone who had the time to do it basically, I've done two: This is the first one. Despite appearing to all be blue, I actually started this one with normal colours, and then added a bunch of blue overlays/ multiply layers, then did the shading on top of that:   Here's the lineart too:     I designed the room with our target demographic in mind; Hatsune Miku, Sonic, and Pokemon are all common special intrests/ hyperfixations for young people with ADHD (find source later but this is based on my experience on the internet lol). The room itself probably could be messier, but I didn't have the patience to draw all of that. Also, maybe they keep meaning to decorate their room, but never got around to it, which may also be impacting their ability to relax in their own space.   Onto the second one, I'm not 100% happy with the way I endered the leaves on the trees, so I might come back to this one, but for no...

W25 Part 2 - Divide, Layers, and Morph Targets

Image
A very brief look into some more zbrush features, these ones are a lot more intuitive and layers especially feels like layers in 2D digital art programs, I can see myself using it for future sculpts if I end up doing more 3D stuff. I appreciate the fact that you can lessen the intensity/ depth and even invert whatever you've just sculpted using layers.        Reference (pigeon photo used for video): St. John, K., Pigeon Quiz [online]. Environment Thumbnails 2

Image
Here's the first post for this:  https://isaacsuniwork.blogspot.com/2025/04/week-9.html Over easter I did a very basic 3D level blockout to make it easier to do environment thumbnails: Scale is always really difficult for me, so importing it into unreal and walking around was really useful so that I could adjust the size of buildings and such accordingly. It took me a while to figure out how to import stuff from Maya into Unreal and be able to move the objects around (the gimbal would just slide around but the objects didn't move with it). At first I moved all of the stuff that was already in Unreal over to where the imported stuff was, turns out I had to tick a box that said something like "dynamic actor," (which I figured out myself, google wasn't helpful as it was either the AI overview or slightly different problems). I think to be able to walk around between the buildings I'd also have to import everything individually, but this is only something basi...
