Character Thumbnails + Peer critique notes

Firstly, I did these sort of initial sketches/ studies loosely based on the Teraton unit from Deadzone (right), and a generic Metroid/doom/halo helmet (left).

I did this quick little pose too,

Then I did some lizard studies, and started on the thumbnails (the thumbnails are a bit of a mess and spread out across many files, layers, etc, so I tried to keep track of them by numbering them, but it's still a bit all over the place):

I defaulted to giving them human eyes because I was focused on the emotion, but my lecturer pointed out that I should experiment with some more reptilian eyes, to make it a bit more alien and unnerving. I might not make both of them what are essentially space dragonborn, but for now I've got two main designs with different vibes, this first one is more geared towards being the mercenary, I tried to make his eyes more viper-like:

And this second one I designed with the rebs in mind, I tried to make this guy's eyes more like a ball python or otherwise more like snakes with darker/ cuter eyes to make him appear more "good" than the other design. I think the darker ones ended up being a bit too cute from a distance though (if you look closely, and if blogger has preserved the image quality, I did still give those eyes slit pupils). There's also a close-up generic eye for either of them, more of a warm up really

Then I moved onto poses. This first one is more of a warmup sketch too, you'll see copies of the head/face thumbnails in a lot of these:

Then I experimented with body plans, mainly how the head attaches to the rest of the body.

Here's a pose thumbnail - this one's more the mercenary character. I thought it would be cool to give him a laser-y version of a khopesh (an Egyptian hooked sword)

Used a dragon from game of thrones to help draw him roaring:

then I added the roar plus a couple of details to the pose:

This was the initial design before I gave him three digits per hand/foot:

more poses/ thumbnails:

25 below is more like 24.5, I only changed the toes

Peer critique notes: keep the dewclaws on the dragon guy (I had them in some thumbnails but not others), think about their weapons and how they interact/ make sure they're balanced in terms of range etc, bulk up the armour on the second guy's forearms to protect from the draconic guys sword/ as a bonus guard. Keep the main helmet design (based off of old posable figure). Take a look at Halo too.

As an aside, someone said they really liked the choice of blue for the dragon guy when I did this bust:

I only really used blue as a default/ instead of black and white, but based on that I'll use blue for the main design too
