Extras - D&D Scene

This is some bonus art I started over the Christmas holidays, it's a scene from a horror themed D&D campaign my brother's in.

Warning for blood and general spookiness:

This is what I've done so far - A lot happened leading up to this in terms of the game's story but the essential information is that his party is fighting a false hydra (Kemp 2014), and my brother rolled a nat 20 for the killing blow. The false hydra being situated at the top with all the blood flowing up towards it is such a cool idea and fun to draw, getting the perspective/ composition right was a bit finicky but I think I've managed to do it. When I finish this I'm going to paint the background and cel shade the characters, just to make them a bit more visually distinct and stand out from the background.

I had a couple other ideas for composition and a different scene entirely:

This one was a much more dramatic version of the final scene, with all the focus on the false hydra and the blood being pulled towards it, smeared up along the walls and across the ceiling - this would've been the players perspective as they enter the room the monster was in.

This one was going to be two perspectives of the town as they head towards the church. The False Hydra was originally created by Arnold Kemp and posted Goblin Punch blog - they make people forget that they exist, so most people can't see them, and then when people suddenly dissapear, everyone forgets about them too, so I wanted to draw the whole party walking down the street, and then to mirror that with a version with all the false hydra heads in there. I copy and pasted these heads from a couple of warmup sketches, pictured below:

These guys are so much fun to draw, and a great way to practive drawing heads, hence the toolkit 2 tags. I think i subconsciously referenced the scream mask (Craven 1996) here too.

Before getting started I sketched the characters of the rest of the party, I had already done sketches of my brother's D&D character before year 2 started so I won't be including that here:

They all made Picrews (Picrew n.d.) of their characters, and one of them had already done some sketches of his character, so I used all of those as references.

I drew a little inspiration from Caitlin from Arcane (Netflix 2021) for this one to come up with the rest of her design, and while searching for references, I found this, which I thought was pretty funny so I'm including it as a reference:

As a serious reference, here is Caitlin's character sheet:
