Winter Break Work - Creature Concept, Model and Video

Over Christmas I discovered that some ants also farm aphids, so I thought they'd be perfect as little non - hostile creatures:

I was struggling to get the aphid design down so I quickly modelled it in maya and finished it off in Zbrush. Just as we need 2D art to make 3D art, sometimes making 3D models first can help when making 2D designs, or certain perspective drawings. Sculpting can also help flesh out a design if drawing it isn't working, sometimes it's easier to add on loads of details onto a 3D object, and then translate that model into a reference sheet later. If you've already designed a character in 2D, then you would need a full reference sheet and/or orthographics so that you or the 3D artist can make an acurate model.

Now that I had the model, I used that as reference to sketch out a design. I still really liked the little creature that's been circled, so maybe it could be repurposed as ant larvae or something similar.
