Week 7 - Studio Practice

This week we discussed how much work to do/ what assets we should complete for the project. The general idea was to do character sheets for an important character, companion character, boss, and one or two creatures for each of the two main areas in the game.

I also got started on some thumbnails for the companion character without the mask, so that I could do a close up/ bust of them with and without the mask:

Above is my general design philosophy for how people might look in the colony. Our team lead suggested that the people become more mutated the further underground they live, so some future designs may be more or less mutated than this initial sketch.

These are the companion's face thumbnails. They would be among the people who live closer to the surface and frequently emerge for supplies or to explore, so they look relatively normal. At first I thought people within the colony wouldn't have the means to style their hair properly, so it might be kinda matted or messy, but then I proceeded to design some of them with locs and/ or braids, so maybe some characters spend more time on their hair. Some protective hairstyles could be adapted to either incoorperate or try to keep out the fungus, so I drew a faint blanket of spores/ fungus over some of their hair. Thumbnail 6 stood out to our lecturer so I took that one further with sketches 8 and 9.

I also started to sketch the companion bust during class, I did the sketches and the linework for the mask (but forgot to screenshot), and from there I carried on at home. Our key influences are shows/ movies like Into the Spiderverse (Sony 2018) and Arcane (Netflix 2021).
