Hand studies log

In week 6 during class we started drawing some hand studies, I drew 17 hands (or 14 if you don't count the initial diagrams as well as the Master and Crazy Hand (Sora Ltd. 2018) which were 3D models instead of real hands) which means I have 33-36 hands left to draw:

The first hand of many is this big thumbs up as a reaction for the overworld sprite in the industry practice project I'm working on - lot of these studies are for characters in the same project. Later you'll see some concept sketches for this character, hence this post also has the 'Dev Log' label.

I'm also just referencing my own hands for this at the moment, although I do plan on finding some references of different looking hands so that I can draw more than one type of hand.

Next are various poses holding a small, vaguely Game Boy shaped object (I was holding a small digital camera for these):

(This takes us up to 30-33 hands in total)

For context here is the character that I needed the poses for:

This is a bit of a joke character, in class we saw a duracell advert and I thought it might be funny if we had what is definitely not the duracell rabbit have a device that needs new batteries that the player has to find (something along those lines, at least).

I copied and shrank down the hand studies so that I could draw the rest of the poses around them, These are only concept sketches but I would like to redraw them later and stylise it more.

Next is some hands holding a mug,

 Character for context again:

Next are some studies unrelated to any characters:

This takes us up to 48-51 hands! I'll do a couple more just to be certain and to get some different hand types in there, but I think these went pretty well all things considered. For some poses it was a bit difficult to see where the middle knuckle is in order to discern the structure of the rest of the hand, so I had to block out the basic shapes first (ans sometimes the negative space) to help me visualise things. A lot of these poses are also kinda awkward but I thought they looked interesting to draw. I liked to sketch in lines along the sides too, similar to contour lines but basically where the lighter side/ palm of the hand usually is.

Bonus hands! 23/11/24:

I'm drawing Deadpool and Wolverine (Marvel 2024) for my dad's birthday card, and figured I could include parts of it here for the 2D toolkit 2 work:

(this is the same hand again, just close up so you can see the construction)

I also drew one hand (then copy and pasted it) for the base sketch that I'm using to design armour on top of for the vampire character:

This alongside some more hands featured in my industry week 3D character development post makes hands 50-something, I'm starting to loose track, but when I'm drawing I try to use the same kind of structure from the hands recap lesson.
