Week 4 - Studio Practice

This week we got on with working on the project and deciding who would do what in preperation for our pitch presentation. I'm focusing on the fungus tribe part of the game, and here's some of the concept art I did during the session:

You might recognise sketches 1-4 from my last post - Our art director Tilly said to make it more obvious that they're wearing masks, so I added a few more sketches with the masks off and from another angle where you can see the straps and part of the person underneath. I added some more details to sketch 4 as well. I really like how 7 turned out, although I wish I had used references as I'm not 100% sure about the legs. These are evolved/mutated humans thousands of years later, but any changes to the anatomy should be purposeful.

I think later I will try to experiment with the anatomy and with incoorperating the mushroom hair from my initial concept right at the beginning, and with adding more bones/ details to the outfits.

Some more enviroment concept art, I probably should've done some/ any thumbnails for this and the next one but I had a really clear vision of what I wanted to draw, so I got started right away. The ants at the end of the tunnel are meant to blend in a little, but I airbrushed a lighter colour behind them as my lecturer suggested just to make them stand out a little bit - it looks a bit flat/empty without it. The fungus is bioluminescent, and it changes from pink to blue as you go deeper underground. Something to do with the amount of oxygen, maybe also to do with the Ph levels, etc. The player character here is kind of a placeholder silhouette as we haven't gotten around to designing the main character yet.

Initially I just sketched some more poses and outfits for the fungal tribe guys (pictured below) - then Tilly mentioned making the masks glow etc, so I made the whole thing darker, added some shading, and added all the glowing fungus. I tried to make it look like they've smeared it all over themselves, maybe made a paint out of the fungus or something. I added something onto the guy on the right's exposed arm too - not sure if it's more fungus or some ant eggs in there, but there's something on their arm.

Here's the initial sketch before I added all the lighting and shading
