Week 3 - Skills/ Knowledge Recap + Studio Practice
This week we briefly recapped colour schemes and shape language, and were then tasked with making moodboards for the colour schemes of our project.
There was also a warmup where we drew fire hydrants or extinguishers without references I think, which I missed, so I'm writing this here to remind myself to do that at some point.
As part of the shape language recap we were challenged with designing a character that was either triangular but friendly, or round but intimidating. I pretty quickly sketched out a really laid back-looking dragon character, but I really wanted to try the round and initimidating design without just drawing essentially Kingpin, this was the result:
Our lecturer also brought up the idea of a crow in a balaclava which I had to try:
There were a couple of possible outcomes here: a tiny balaclava for birds, or the crow just snuggling up in a human balaclava, I've drawn both here, and a bonus little sitting crow just for the sake of it.
Onto the studio practice section:
This moodboard was for a potential colour scheme for the fungus cult/tribe in our game, I included some Zelda stuff in there for the colours but also for some design inspiration. What's interesting is that the Koroks (Nintendo 2002) are an evolved form of the people from the Kokiri tribe (Nintendo 1998) in the earlier games, who were more humanoid, so I'm keeping them in mind for these guys because the humans in this world will have also evolved/ mutated a fair bit.
We also considered other animals briefly and how they'd interact in the new world, one possibility is there could be squirrels or rodents of some kind that chew on the mycelial network, disturbing the ants and fungi. I didn't get around to drawing that, but I might come back to it later.
Here's some sketches for the fungal tribe designs:
The general idea is that they wore masks and robes, I think Izzy (someone from our group/team) suggested we do bones and skulls for their costumes. I thought it might be cool if they wore shed exoskeletons from the ants (effectively ant skulls), in order to hide/ blend in with the colony:
This skeleton mood board covers both groups, someone had an idea where the fungus people eventually become zombies as the fungus takes over their bodies, and I thought it might be cool if people's bones were made of plastic (or partially made of plastic) like how Wolverine's skeleton became metal (Adamantium) because of all the microplastics in their systems + because is this the extremely distant future.
Below are the moodboards for the plastic people:
And here are a couple of sketches/ ideas for their designs:
Our team's leader said she wanted the plastic tribe to be very abstract and high-fashion inspired, and of course it had to look futuristic as our game is set in the very far future, so I focused on smooth/ streamlined shapes, and a lot of Y2K adjacent stuff too, including some games from that time (for the most part). The result I think ended up being a more retro futiristic vibe.
