Before anything we had that fire extnguisher warmup again:
We had to draw a fire extinguisher from memory in perspective within a 5-10 minute time limit, so I ended up doing 2-point perspective. I also ended up having time to draw a second one, which makes up for the one I missed a few weeks back. Almost had time to draw a third but only managed to sketch the cube.
Here are a couple of character concept sketches and thumbnails for the Building Alliances game project - some of these were done during class and others were done beforehand:
First of all, we have something that I hope is hilarious; this is potentially going to be a companion stealth character. I saw this video about dumb things people have actually designed in the fashion industry and knew what I had to do. My current working story is that this was a faulty robot that didn't get discarded properly, and now it's running around causing chaos. Later I changed the legs to be less human-like as it seemed very objectifying/ that was the problem with the original design, although there is something to be said about literally turning feminine-presenting legs into an object, having the head and torso (the brains and heart/ the parts typically seen as that which makes one human) hidden in a rubbish bag, as if their humanity has been thrown away, leaving only the objectified legs behind in this dystopian future.
I really enjoyed rendering the plastic bag on all of these too, I used a lot of add/multiply layers and made sure it had an extreme contrast to make it more shiny, and to imply structure.
Next
we have these thumbnails for the ant colony companion character, I
wanted this guy to be sort of mischevious, curious and friendly, a
helpful little guide for the player character. My other idea was just a
smaller/ younger ant, acting more like a weird dog than a guide, you can
see it in the bottom right corner.
These
are some outfit thumbnails, I did copy and paste parts for the sake of
speed, I just wanted to experiment with the clothes. Below are some more
sketches and a refinement for the second outfit idea I had, I put the
belt tie over to one side to try and make them look less like a ninja:
Here are some more sketches, I drew all of these first and then took my favourites for the main thumbnails above:
I knew I wanted the ant colony humans to be wearing loose clothing that looked cobbled together, so I focused on adding lots of layers and big shapes - these were really fun to draw. I took a lot of inspiration from the character Skull Kid from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (Nintendo 2000), I really liked their costume and poses. That's also where the ant mask idea came from. The shoes were a bit tricky, at first I thought they could wear bits of shedded ant exoskeleton and make some jaggedy shoes that have a lot of grip, but then I thought they probably would just go barefoot, over time they might develop larger, hardened feet, but I didn't want to draw that, so I just gave them fabric boots/ covers.

This one is a concept for a sort of high priestess type character, I wanted to try and make some of the characters look more mutated so I played around with the proportions/ gave her a hunched back. My teammates wanted to see bones get incooperated into these designs so I've tried to add them here, I figured more important characters would get more bones or ant parts added into their costume. This initial design is quite rudimentary and/or cartoony, it's like the concept of a concept - I do develop this further in later posts.
Finally, in class I quickly did a viper study as they came up in conversation about the title and potential enemies. It is a little stylised and the eye is too far back, but it was just a quick sketch. Ignore the caption in the picture/ screenshot, this was the best reference photo I could find.
